#10 Edition Business - Gig: Freedom Or False Hope

Has the revolution in work made fools of us all? With former Special Assistant to the President of the United States for Economic Policy Pippa Malmgren; economist, blogger and activist Dr Faiza Shaheen; and writer, strategist and former digital editor for Newsweek and the New Statesman Serena Kutchinsky.

On one side of the coin, the side of the coin most often shown, we have the prevailing bright and promising narrative. The one that posits now as the greatest time to work remotely and travel the world. That everybody, especially millennials, increasingly have the ability to choose and be empowered by their work, and the notion put forth by some economists that this rapidly growing gig economy can shore up income inequality because it grants those with lower incomes a greater ability to find work.

On the other side of the coin, we have research pointing to how the gig economy benefits higher-earners just as much if not more than everybody else, and worst-case scenarios that point towards the end of salaries, the end of health insurance, the end of pensions… Our outstanding trio looked at all of this, whilst at the same time touching on the latest budget, the future of work, the gender pay gap, and even some utopian ideas for a fairer economy.
